A consistent finish requires patience. Keep surfaces flat, move through grits (400→600→800→1000+), and test with a soft light to spot micro-scratches. Final buffing should be quick and gentle.
Grit progression that actually works
Soak wet/dry sheets for 10–15 minutes, keep your piece moving in one direction per grit, then rotate 90° on the next grit. If you still see lines when rotated, you didn’t remove the previous scratches.
Flatness check
Use a hard, flat backing like a glass tile. Flexible foams round edges and introduce valleys—great for curves, not flats. Shine a diffused light at a shallow angle to reveal high/low spots.
Buffing without burns
Short, light passes with a cotton wheel. If the piece warms up, stop. Heat softens polymer and imprints wheel texture. Finish with a clean microfiber to remove compound haze.

Temperature Control Without Guesswork
Use an oven thermometer and a timer. Bake small test tiles for each brand and record times and firmness levels to build your own reference chart.
Calibrate once, bake forever
Map your oven’s hot and cool zones. Place thermometers front/back and center. If there’s a 10–15°F swing, tent your pieces with foil and preheat longer to stabilize.
Tile matrix testing
Make 1×1 in tiles marked with brand and color. Bake at different durations in 5-minute increments. After cooling, perform flex and nail-scratch tests. Document results for repeatable outcomes.
Safety and ventilation
Bake within manufacturer specs, use a dedicated tray or toaster oven, and ventilate. Avoid burning—if you smell sharp, acrid fumes, stop, air out, and discard overheated clay.
